Sitting Your Life Away

There is a silent killer among us. It is at our very own office. It is a thing that we would never expect, yet we trust it to support us day in and day out. I’m talking of course, of our chair. Never would have guessed, right? It turns out that prolonged periods of sitting can lead to serious back pain. Back pain is the #1 cause of disability worldwide according to a study done by The Global Burden of Disease in 2010.  It is also the third most expensive reason that people take off work due to illness, just behind cancer and heart disease. However, back pain isn’t the only health issue you should worry about. Sitting in a chair for the majority of the day has also been demonstrated to cause high cholesterol, high blood sugar and create a 64% better chance of dying from heart disease – despite getting 30 minutes a day of exercise. This is only just a few of the health problem that can be caused by sitting improperly at work for a prolonged period of time.

 

The danger doesn’t go away when you leave the office either because in your home lies another silent killer. Your comfy couch or chair. I’m sure everyone has their own special chair or couch they come home to after a long hard day of work. You’re tired, you’re back hurts, and you just want to relax. So where do you go? You go to your special chair or couch of course. You think it’s your friend because it makes you feel good and it’s always there waiting for you when you get home. I’m here to tell you that it’s not. It may feel like this piece of furniture is relieving your back pain from work when in all actuality it might be making it worse. The wrong type of couch or chair can lead to worsening back problems.

 

How can you save yourself from your chairs? Obviously you can’t work standing up all day and you want to relax when you get home. What can you do? The next several blogs I will be posting will highlight the different steps you can take to reduce back pain and other health issues caused by sitting improperly. Each post will also express what health problems can ensue when you do not sit properly.
