SCIENTISTS IDENTIFY DNA MARKER FOR MIGRAINE RISK

For the first time researchers have established a genetic marker for migraine headaches. These findings are from a meta-analysis of 3,202 people with migraines and 40,062 control subjects.

Investigators identified the DNA variant on chromosome 8, which is linked with a risk factor for migraines. This variant affects regulation of the neurotransmitter glutamate. Specifically, it may cause a buildup of glutamate. Consequently, the researchers theorize that glutamate may trigger migraines.
