Obesity is a risk factor for severe headache, according to research presented last month at the American Academy of Neurology’s 57th Annual Meeting in Miami Beach, Florida.
As part of the analysis, researchers surveyed 143,433 people. Thirty-three percent of obese subjects missed more than four days of work annually due to a severe headache, compared with 27.2% of overweight people, 27.2% of normal weight people and 26.1% of underweight people. Obese people also reported severe pain more frequently.
“The findings suggest that people with obesity were more likely to report frequent, more painful, and more debilitating headaches than other groups we encountered,” comments lead author Marcelo E. Bigal, MD, PhD.
