Remember, this is NOT the First Swine Flu Panic but the key is to remain calm -- this isn't the first time the public has been warned about swine flu. The last time was in 1976 it resulted in the massive swine flu vaccine campaign.

The vaccine was also blamed for 25 deaths. However, several hundred people developed crippling Guillain-Barrι Syndrome after they were injected with the swine flu vaccine. Even healthy 20-year-olds ended up as paraplegics.
And the swine flu pandemic itself? It never materialized.

Vaccination Against What!
The latest issue of Neurology Journal (Sept 2004) has published a study that suggests a link between hepatitis B vaccination and multiple sclerosis. While it is a small study results showed a 3 times increased incidence of multiple sclerosis when comparing vaccinated multiple sclerosis sufferers versus non-vaccinated.
This is interesting considering the World Health Organization considers the hepatitis B vaccination as one of the safest, most immunogenic and effective vaccines and suggest that it should be included in routine childhood vaccination schedules for all children in all countries.
According to the British Medical Journal doubts over the hepatitis B vaccine first surfaced in France in 1996, after a major national vaccination campaign, when newspapers reported about 200 cases of multiple sclerosis among vaccinated patients. Although scientific review suggested the vaccine was safe, a collapse of public confidence eventually obliged the French government to suspend routine hepatitis B vaccination of school children.

HPV Vaccine Blamed for Teen's Paralysis
A month after 13 year old Jenny Tetlock was vaccinated against the HPV virus, she missed the lowest hurdle in gym class. It was the first sign of a degenerative muscle disease that 15 months later left her nearly completely paralyzed.
Her father, Philip Tetlock, a professor at UC-Berkeley, has embarked on an odyssey to find out whether the vaccine, Gardasil, is to blame.
Tetlock is not the only one concerned. The public watchdog group Judicial Watch has been periodically obtaining adverse event reports on Gardasil from the FDA. 10 deaths have been linked to Gardasil since September 2007, and there have been 140 reports so far this year of serious side effects such as miscarriage and Guillain-Barrι syndrome.

Vaccine-Autism Question Divides Parents, Scientists
13-year old Michael Cedillo is at the center of a court case pitting thousands of families of children with autism against the medical establishment. While a number of prestigious medical institutions say there is no link between vaccines and autism, the families believe vaccines caused their children's autism, and have taken their case to court.
Theresa and Mike Cedillo, Michelle's parents, believe the MMR vaccine, which at the time contained a mercury-based preservative, drastically altered the course of their daughter's development. Within days of receiving the injection, Michelle suffered from a high fever, persistent vomiting and problems with her digestion -- and also stopped speaking and no longer responded to her name.

Wellness can be some what an elusive term, some people use it just to describe the absence of sickness. From a chiropractic perspective, it is so much more. It is a state of being at your optimal physical, mental, and spiritual function. This obviously varies from person to person, but we are now coming up with ways to measure wellness both objectively and by self- reflection.

Phenomenal Phenomenon
Our world and our universe is an ecosystem. Within an ecosystem there is balance, a homeostatic state, that the system is driven to achieve. Our individual bodies are also ecosystems, driven by inborn forces that maintain homeostasis. We often see the universe reflecting ourselves and ourselves reflecting the universe. One could term it a phenomenon.
Phenomenon literally means the form of man with on referring to the unit form or essence. In others words, the essential form of human beings. Interestingly enough in the English language we use it to refer to both the observation of fact and in reference to something remarkable as if the two are separate. Often we loose sight of the remarkable nature of fact. Emerson suggested that, “seen in the light of thought the world is always phenomenal”.

Pathological Profits
Making profits from sickness is the name of the game when it comes to drug based ‘health’ care.
Let’s look at the anatomy of the ‘system’:
1. First we create a drug
2. Next we invent a disease that the drug can be used for
3. Then we lobby governments to pay for the drug
4. Now we sell doctors on diagnosing the disease
5. Then we must sell doctors on the need to prescribe the drug
And, hey presto what have you got? Huge profits from drugs for every disease.
For today, let’s look at points number 4 and 5 the selling part.
Selling doctors, and the public on a given drug is a major undertaking. Whilst the usual ‘bribes’ for doctors of lavish seminars, holidays, conferences and dinners are used to good effect, the need to maximize profits goes even further.

As human beings we have, as one of our greatest attributes, the drive to constantly improve our world and ourselves. This drive has led to the incredible accomplishments of mankind in our short life here. The modes of transport we enjoy, the communications systems we take for granted, the scientific discoveries, both microscopic and macroscopic that we employ in our everyday life have all come from mankind’s drive to improve.
It is also evident that we live in a ‘cause effect’ world and often a ‘fix’ of a given ‘problem’ can end up as the ‘cause’ of another ‘problem’. This situation is really obvious in health care where we can find ourselves in hot water as a result of applying a treatment to a given ‘problem’ only to find that it causes several ‘new’ ‘problems’.

Oops We Did It Again!
No, it’s not just a Britney Spears lyric, it’s becoming the catch cry of the pharmaceutical industry. Once again drugs have been recalled when new research with longer parameters than the last demonstrates concern for the drugs safety. The drug Vioxx was recalled at the beginning of the month after a three year clinical trial showed a link with increased cardiovascular incidents. Interestingly, the study was looking at the link between the drugs and another side effect, benign colonic growths.

Planned home births for low risk women using certified professional midwives are no more likely than hospital births to result in birth and neonatal mortality, according to a report in the June 18th issue of the British Medical Journal.
Moreover, the good outcomes are achieved using fewer medical interventions. The study completed in Canada is believe to be the largest prospective study of planned home births to date.

People are pushing their budgets to live up to the so-called ‘ideal’ Christmas and forcing themselves to be merry. For most people, Christmas is just another pressure to add to the list. Yet the reality is that Christmas is far from its original intention. Christmas was created to suit a commercial reality and we followed.
