June is national safety month, and we want to make sure that our clients stay as healthy and happy as possible! That’s why throughout the entire month, we will be posting a series of articles promoting health and safety!
Our first topic is a big one – medication safety. As chiropractors, we do our best to promote pro-active health care – before medication is necessary to fix a problem that could be avoided through regular chiropractic adjustments. However, we realize that medication may become necessary for everyone at some point, and improper use can be extremely dangerous!
Improper usage of medications, not just prescription, can be deadly. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse,
“prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs are the second most commonly abused substances by Americans 14 and older.”
Always make sure to follow the proper instructions given by your doctor, pharmacist, and the label of OTC medications. It is a common misconception that OTC and prescription drugs are safer than illegal drugs. However, they can be just as dangerous if used improperly or abused. Especially be mindful of interactions with multiple medications, and very importantly with drugs and alcohol.
Before taking any medications, it is important to consult with your doctor about any potential risk of side effects or dangerous interactions.
And remember, regular chiropractic care is dedicated to keeping your body healthy, and promoting proper communication throughout the nervous system. Help to keep your spine in proper alignment, and stay healthy before medication is necessary to correct common ailments that can be avoided.
Our next topic will go deeper into prescription medication abuse and the dangers to your overall health.
