What should your doctor be telling you about ADHD cures?

Let’s say you take your overactive child to the doctor after repeated complaints by the child’s teachers. After a brief examination and a few questions to you about the child’s behavior at school and at home and how long it has been going on, the doctor recommends a starting dosage of one of the usual ADHD prescriptions: Ritalin, Adderall, Vyvanse, Concerta or other brand or generic names for these drugs.

Usually, the involvement of the doctor will end there, except to renew or increase the dosage from time to time.

What Should Your Doctor be Telling You?

Minimally, he (or she) should explain that there are other causes and ADHD natural remedies.

According to the healthy living blog from Natural News, there are a number of herbs that can help a child whose high level of energy and lowered focus on study could place him in the crosshairs of the school system and the medical/pharmaceutical industries. A 2013 blog posts lists:

  1. Gotu Kola

  2. Gingko Biloba

  3. Gingseng

  4. Valerian.

This is just one suggestion from one person. If you look around, you will see that there are several different routes to a resolution. I offer one in my practice that I will tell you about in a moment.

What Should Your Child’s School be Telling You?

what teachers should be telling - Wellness ChiropracticThere is an additional level of disclosure that should be coming from the school but no one who’s still active in school administration is likely to admit it.

A school receives additional money for each child that is diagnosed with ADHD. According to the physician Stephen Guffanti, that sum could amount to as much as $1,000 per child if that child is also behind in his studies. In an era of shrinking school budgets, this is a powerful pressure point on schools. Once a child is diagnosed with ADHD by a cooperative doctor (who also profits from the administration of drugs) it might be very difficult to get that label lifted. After all, the school will lose money when the label is gone and the prescribing stops.

I Have a Different Philosophy

My philosophy is full disclosure of the potential causes of attention or focus problems. In my practice in Ballwin, I have seen young people coming with a diagnosis of ADHD, but after conferring with the parents and the child, and looking into diet, exercise, allergies and other underlying conditions, we were able to resolve the situation without drugs. To make it easier for families to look at their alternatives, we have a student health analysis that we offer at a very reasonable price. After this analysis, we’ll all have a much better idea of the natural remedies for ADHD that might apply in this child’s case.

I’m not anti-medication when it is actually needed. But when natural remedies eliminate the need for drugs – well, then the drugs weren’t really necessary, were they?

I offer a Student Health Analysis service to help get to the bottom of and remedy ADHD symptoms. Please contact my office (636) 391-1611 today to set an appointment for this valuable service.
