One of the most common complaints for people who first visit my office is that their back hurts.
Back pain is a common problem in today’s world. Over 60% of all Americans will suffer from back pain during their lives, and it is the third most expensive medical reason that people miss work.
Is Chiropractic care effective for back pain relief?
Chiropractic care is effective for back pain
According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, which is the US government’s lead agency for scientific research on complementary and alternative medicine, chiropractic care provides moderate relief for back pain and lower back pain, on par with other treatments such as medication.
The advantage with Chiropractic care over that of taking medication is that Chiropractic care is non-addictive.
The difference between acute and chronic lower back pain
Of course, we can expect that there is a difference between the length of time and treatments required to address acute and chronic lower back pain. After all, if a condition has continued for some time, it is probably the results of long-standing issues – not something that can be solved overnight.
In both cases of chronic and acute back pain, Chiropractic care can help considerably.
According to the NCCAM, which is part of the Department of Health and Human Services, if someone suffers from acute lower back pain, “these patients often improve on their own and usually should remain active, learn about back pain and self-care options, and consider nondrug therapies, including spinal manipulation, if pain persists longer than 4 weeks.” However, I think sufferers of back pain would agree with me that the faster the pain is addressed, the better. In these cases, there’s no reason not to come in and get a few adjustments.
According to the same agency, “Long-term use of opioid drugs usually does not improve functioning for patients with chronic low-back pain. However, these patients may benefit from non-drug therapies, including spinal manipulation.” This indicates to me that there is ample evidence that drugs actually don’t handle chronic back pain – but Chiropractic care can be effective.
Activator Technique and Back Pain Relief
In another article, I explain why Activator Technique is effective and gentle chiropractic care.
Because it is so gentle, it can be quite effective for lower back pain relief.
